Are You Willing to do What Others Will Not?
With in reason of course, you have to try new things.
Lots of people want to lead, but not everyone is willing to do what is needed to be a good leader.
This quote came from a great podcast by The Table Group called At the Table. I think it is a great daily listen.
What does this mean for your sales?
While this quote is specific to leadership, it also applies specifically to leading the revenue generation for your small business. Meaning that as a small business leader you have to be willing to try things that others will not, to drive your revenue. I know social media may be scary to you, but you have to create a social media presents. Assuming that is where you find your customers. You may not like cold calling, but you have to reach out to new customers, and that may be the way to do it. That could be through your social media presents, or it could be working with a service that helps you prospect clients. These are the kinds of things that can be scary for any person that is not a “sales persons” but you owe it to your customers present and future to get out there an try something that others will not try.
The weight is on your shoulders.
Whether you decide to try something new or not the weight of selling your product or service is on your shoulders. When you start to hire your first sales professional you share the load a little bit, but the majority of the weight is still on your shoulders. Think of the new things you try as a backpack or a harness that will help you manage that weight. It will not make the weight smaller, but trying new things will support you, it will help you manage that weight as you go. Gradually as you continue to grow and try new things the backpack becomes a basket. That way you and the entire sales team can help carry the weight.
Who should be helping you sell?
One last thought on this topic of trying something different is who should be helping you sell? Can you get customers to help you, think referral programs or social media promotions. What about on your team? Do you have technicians engaging with customers, can they advertise for you, or upsell? Can you have a referral program for employees. Sure maybe the call center folks, or those working in the shop may not be sales folks, but they do have neighbors and friends. If they bring in a sale can you give them a bonus? These are some different things that you can try.
So remember:
Try something different that others are not willing to try.
New things will help you manage the weight on your shoulders.
Who else on your team can help you sell?
Thanks for your time today reading this post. If you know of anyone else that could be helped by reading this, please share it. Thanks!
