Burnout does not mean you are working hard, it means you are working unsustainably. According to Gallup, 37% of people globally reported feeling stressed in 2023. As a founder, you are likely pushing even higher. But stress is not just a personal issue it is a threat to your company’s growth. In this week’s post, I’ll break down how to recognize and reduce stress before it breaks you.
You Ca not Scale If You Burn Out
As a founder, you are not just the engine of your business. You are also the brakes, the steering, and the fuel. That means when you go down, everything slows, if not stops completely. If you are constantly exhausted, overwhelmed, or snapping at small things, those are signs, not of weakness, but of overload. Your business needs your creativity, your clarity, your leadership. You ca not offer any of those if your tank is always on E.
Burnout does not just show up in mental fog or frustration. It shows up in poor decision-making, missed opportunities, and low team morale. It also sends the message to your team: “This is the only way to succeed here.” That is not leadership it is a warning sign. Growing your business is great, but it also means that you have to be prepared for more responsibility. You have to know how to delegate. You have to learn to manage your stress because there will be stress.
Stress Management Is a Strategic Skill
We talk a lot about scaling product, process, or pipeline. But your most important infrastructure? It is you. Managing your stress is not a luxury it is a strategic investment. Instead of waiting until you “have time to recharge,” build the recharge in. What is your system for stress recovery?
Morning walk
Mid-day pause
Unscheduled hours on Fridays
No-work Sundays
Hobbies
Time with family and friends
Stress is cumulative so is recovery. Start small, but make it consistent. You do not have to meditate for an hour or take a sabbatical. Just breathe. Move. Laugh. Get sunlight. Build rituals that pull you back to center before stress pulls you under. Make sure you do take vacations, even if they are staycations to start. Build up to longer periods away. It will help you.
Find Your Off Switch and Protect It
One of the most valuable assets a founder can have? A reliable reset. Something that tells your brain and body you are not working right now. This is harder than ever in a world where Slack is on our phones and emails never stop. But here is what I have learned:
I think better after a walk.
I write better after rest.
I lead better after I have unplugged.
You do not need a complete overhaul of your life. You need one ritual that gives you a break from the mental weight of building something big. Start by identifying the one thing you are doing out of habit not because it is helping. Maybe it is a scroll session before bed. Or back-to-back Zooms all day. Replace one draining habit this week with something that actually refuels you.
Another great idea that I have picked up from Michael Hyatt is a workday startup and shut down ritual. What are you doing daily that helps your mind know, “Now we are working.” Or “now we are down with work.” These rituals also help you flag to-dos that need to move to the next day, key items that you have to get done today, and follow-ups that you need to schedule. It is a great way to set yourself up for success each day.
Action Step
Take 30 minutes this week and ask yourself:
What habit is currently draining me?
What small replacement could give me more energy?
How can I turn that into a repeatable ritual?
Then schedule that new ritual this week. Bonus points if you block it off on your calendar like it is just as important as your biggest client meeting. Pro-tip make it reoccurring and do not move it.
