Spoiler alert this post headline is a bit of click bate, because the answer is less of a secret than you think.
Luck requires a lot of hard work
Working hard puts you in the situations to be lucky. There are many times you hear about someone that was lucky, but in reality they were working hard to be where they needed to be for that deal to close. They went where the customers were so they could talk to them and understand their needs. Often times small business comes from someone that worked in a corporation, saw a need that that corporations was not going to meet and then moved out on their own to solve that problem. Were they lucky to gain all of that business? No, not at all they just knew the customer was there and they put in the hard work to start the business that could service those customers. Hard work also means asking customers what needs they have. How did they enjoy (or not) the experience with your company? It is easy to spend a lot of money on marketing and pull in a customer, but it takes hard work to learn what those customers need next to keep them on board. You have to be willing to kill sacred cows because they no longer serve your customers.
Overnight success after years of hard work
Especially with social media we see a lot of “overnight successes”. Are the really successful overnight? The truth is probably not. They probably worked very hard for multiple nights. They worked over weeks and months. Just like an iceberg remember that you cannot see everything that those “overnight success” stories are doing at 10 PM at night or 5AM in the morning. You do not see the struggles they have when the first five customers say no to their offering. You will become an “overnight success” with a lot of hard work. You will become one of those folks that everyone does not know what you put into the success you have had. You just have to work hard. There are no quick roads to the top.
So remember:
Luck is a function of the hard work you put in.
Be where your customers are so you can be “lucky”.
Overnight successes are the result of a lot of nights (or mornings) of work.
